Week 9

36 Custom Textures (Light to Dark)

 Light Texture

The Concept for the light texture is "Simplicity" as only rectangles and squares were used to create this pattern, the two shapes are simple because the have only have perpendicular angels unlike other complicated shapes.

Medium Texture

The Concept for this Medium texture is renewable as it represents new life in the from of a plant growing Fruit. As a plant sprouts, new life is born and the cycle forever continues.

Dark Texture

The concept for the dark texture is "adaptability" as this texture was drawn in quarters but when more than one of this texture is placed together, a full circle is formed suggesting that the pattern adapts to itself to form a pattern on any walls with corners or irregular bends.

Completed SketchUp Design

Final Design Renders

The stairs to the light rail represents the concept of "escalation", the concept was taken literally and stairs were made to steeply ascend into the rail platform.

The concept of "adaptability has been considered as the light rail operates on existing roads with traffic so it has been elevated so traffic does not halt when the train stops for customers, this is adapting to what currently exist as well as "adapting" to traffic conditions.

The concept of "renewability" has been considered in this design by implementing solar panels to power the stations electrical appliances such as ticket and vending machines. Large glass skylights have also been implemented so artificial lighting is not needed during day time.

This design attempts to "remove the barriers of interior and exterior' by using glass as a major building material, this is to achieve a feeling of openness and freedom all while providing adequate indoor shelter.

"Social connectivity" has also been achieved as the station provides area where people can socialise and connect with each other, the station serves as a hub for people to meet and gather.

The concept of "Unrestrained places that flow" is also considered as this particular area was designed to be open and transparent through the station while providing shelter from any weather.

"Prism based geometry and repetition of shapes" is a concept which can be applied to a majority of things, stairs are a good example as they are consistently repetitive and use very simple prism based geometry.

Week 5 Experiment 2

Experiment 2

EXPERIMENT 2: THE SPACE BETWEEN

The two architects we will be using are Mies van der Rohe and Studio Gang.  Working in groups we used our research to collate 5 concepts:

STUDIO GANG

[Adaptability]          Forming new structure over already functional ones
[Renewable]            Minimal environmental impact
[Materiality]            Solving a problem and creating opportunity through design
[Escalation]             Social revitalisation
[Social connectivity] Architecture as a stage

MIES VAN DER ROHE

[1]     Less is more,,,
[2]     Removing barriers between interior and interior
[3]     Simplicity through form and shape
[4]     Prism based geometries and repetition of shapes
[5]     Unrestrained spaces that flow
